Police officers around the country, including in Yakima, are mourning the deaths of  two officers killed in New York City on Saturday.

Yakima Police Chief Dominic Rizzi tells KIT News officers arrived at work today just like they have many other days after the killings of officers in other parts of the country.

"That could happen on any given day and any given city and our officers understand that," Rizzi says. "They are highly trained. They'll go out there and do their job and make sure they go home safe at night."

Rizzi says it's up to individual officers if they want to wear mourning bands across their badges in honor of the two New York City police officers slain on Saturday by a disturbed gunman who ambushed them, then killed himself.
