  • Yakima said thank you to its veterans on Memorial Day during ceremonies throughout the Yakima Valley.

Approximately 100 people attended an event by the Yakima VFW Post 379 at Tahoma Cemetery in Yakima. Members from the American Legion, Disabled American Veterans, Daughters of the American Revolution, Pearl Harbor Survivors and Sons and Daughters of Pearl Harbor Survivors were also part of the short ceremony.

Other programs were held throughout the valley on Memorial Day.

Cemeteries were also busy with thousands of people placing flowers on graves.

  • A 22-year-old man from Yakima faces a burglary charge in Yakima County Superior Court this week after being arrested in connection with a burglary at a home on South 62nd Avenue.

Authorities had been looking for James Purdy since this past Thursday after a curious neighbor took pictures of a couple in the area where the home had been burglarized. That picture led to the arrest of a 25-year-old woman and Sunday’s arrest of Purdy.

Deputies from the Yakima County Sheriff’s office say the neighbors picture of the suspect and their vehicle license were key pieces of evidence that that helped them make arrests in the case.
