The Yakima City Council has set a meeting for Nov. 18 to talk about a six-month moratorium on homeless shelters in the city of Yakima.

Officials from Yakima Neighborhood Health Services want to turn a building near the corner of 6th and Walnut Streets into a homeless shelter.

While the city did approve the opening of three churches as cold weather shelters City Manager Tony O'Rourke say he wants the city to update zoning codes during the moratorium to prevent a growth of shelters in the downtown area.

The council voted 5-2 to implement the moratorium but it will not take effect for another 30 days because there was not an unanimous vote. Council members Kathy Coffey and Rick Ensey voted against the proposal.
