CLE ELUM, Wash. (AP) — The Kittitas County Sheriff's Office says the man who was shot and killed by a Cle Elum police officer was from Port Townsend.

Undersheriff Clay Myers on Friday identified the man as 60-year-old Timothy Meehan.

Cle Elum police said in a release that he pointed a handgun at one of two officers a motel Wednesday night. Officers had responded to a report of a possible suicidal man. Police said the officer shot Meehan twice after he didn't follow orders to drop the gun.

Police say the man was taken to an Ellensburg hospital where he died.

The sheriff's office is investigating the shooting. The officer is on administrative leave during the investigation. His name has not been released.
