SEATTLE (AP) — The Snohomish County Fire District Board of Commissioners has voted to issue a written reprimand to two of its members caught on tape making racially insensitive comments about Mexican laborers.

The Seattle Times reports the reprimand approved Tuesday characterizes their speech as unprofessional and denigrating community members.

Commissioners Bob Meador and David Chan have publicly apologized for their comments made during a break in a March 7 public meeting. But they have resisted calls for their resignation, including from members of the local firefighters union.

The vote for a written reprimand comes after an attempt to impose disciplinary action against Meador and Chan failed Friday on a 2-2 tie vote. The two men voted not to discipline each other and one member of the five-member board was absent.
