A weekend fire at a Yakima duplex was discovered by kids who alerted their parents, Yakima fire officials say.

The duplex, in the 700 block of South Naches Avenue, caught fire Saturday night after flames from a fireplace spread to nearby items.
Yakima city firefighters responded at about 11:20 p.m. Firefighters said children sleeping on the couch realized fire from the fireplace had lit other items on fire. The parents and kids got out of the house, but the father had minor burns.
Shift Commander Capt. Mitch Cole says "It appeared that they lost all of their personal possessions in the fire."
A dog inside the duplex died.

The amount of damage to the residence is around $70,000.

The American Red Cross is helping the six people displaced by the fire.
