What was supposed to be a fun trip for a Naches family took a horrible turn Wednesday.

Their young son drowned at a lake near Enumclaw, and the community is now mourning the loss.

Friends said Zach Kuhn was going to be a sophomore at Naches High School. They said he was a teenager with a big personality, a loyal friend and an avid baseball player.

The 17-year-old passed away Wednesday after going for a swim at Deep Lake and never came back up.

Some witnesses said they saw him bobbing up and down, but at first thought he was joking. It wasn't until later that they realized he was in trouble.

The King County Sheriff's Office Dive Team found the boy 50 feet under water and pulled him up nearly an hour later. Rescue workers performed CPR all the way to an Auburn hospital. Doctors worked on the boy but couldn't revive him.

Zach was attending a Christian music festival with his family at the time of his death.
