City officials are looking at expanding the Yakima Police Department the city jail, city courts and attorney offices. But City Manager Tony O'Rourke says the price tag is big -- estimated at more than $100 million. He says the police headquarters is aging and needs an expansion along with other city facilities.
"That facility is 20 years old and simply given the growth of the department, the courts, attorney offices, there's legitmate need to find additional space."
O'Rourke says the city jail currently holds 79 inmates but needs to be expanded to hold at least 150 to 200 inmates. He says officials are looking at possibly creating a substation in the West Valley area that could cut expansion costs downtown. O'Rourke says he's meeting with the city Public Safety Committee on Aug. 22 to talk more about city space needs before possibly taking a proposal to the full city council later this year or early next year.
