BLAINE, Wash. (AP) — An official says a Canadian border agent shot at a Washington state crossing was breathing when she was flown to a hospital, but there's no further word on her condition.

Royal Canadian Mounted Police Cpl. Bert Paquet says the border officer was in her booth when she was shot in the neck at about 2 p.m. Tuesday by a man trying to enter Canada in a van with Washington state plates.

He says it appears the suspect then quickly shot himself to death.

Paquet says investigators are trying to piece together what happened and why.
