BELLINGHAM (AP) — Officials say border crossings into Whatcom County from Canada are starting off much as they did in 2016.

The Bellingham Herald reports that 848,791 people traveled south through the five Whatcom County border crossings in January.

Additional data gathered by Western Washington University's Border Policy Research Institute shows that's nearly equal to the January 2016 count of 848,339.

Data shows last month's total is down 13.6 percent compared to January 2015.
