State officials say some prison officers were injured while breaking up an early morning attack at the Washington State Penitentiary in Walla Walla.

The Department of Corrections reports that just before 5:30 a.m. Saturday an inmate assaulted a cook who was working in a prison kitchen.

Officers heard the incident and responded. A prison spokesman says three officers were injured while restraining the prisoner. The cook and one of the officers were taken to a local hospital. They were treated for injuries to their head and face and released.

Prison officials say the incident is being investigated. The inmate involved has been placed on segregation and prisoners in the West Complex of the prison are under restrictions while the incident is being reviewed.
