The City of Yakima has an interim City Manager. The council named Michael Morales to the position during a special meeting Wednesday to talk about the resignation of City Manager Don Cooper. Cooper resigned saying he must return to Florida to care for a sick family member. Morales is  currently the Assistant City Manager but that position will be eliminated in the 2012 budget. To find a replacement, the city is considering using the same job search firm it used to find Cooper. A big piece of unfinished business Cooper leaves behind is the hiring of a new police chief. It's the city manager's responsibility to find someone for the job. Mayor Micah Cawley says that the search for a new police chief will not slow down because Morales has the authority to conduct the search as the interim manager.
