Yakima Shootings: One Suspect Killed, Another Victim Critical
Two separate shooting incidents happened Saturday in Yakima within hours of each other, leaving one suspect dead and another victim in critical condition.
THE FIRST SHOOTING WAS REPORTED ON THE YAKIMA GREENWAY
The first incident happened at about 4:34 PM Saturday, when Yakima police responded to a report of a person armed with a rifle who had walked into the lobby of a hotel at the 1700 block of E. Yakima Ave. The suspect, a 31-year-old Yakima man, made his way out of the hotel lobby and onto the Greenway Pathway, where he was contacted by Yakima police officers. They ordered the man to drop the gun but he refused and was shot by a Yakima Officer. Despite lifesaving efforts, the suspect was pronounced dead at the scene.
THE OFFICER IS NOW ON PAID ADMINISTRATIVE LEAVE
The incident is being investigated by the Yakima Valley Special Investigations Unit (YVSUI).
Just over six hours later, at about 10:30 PM, Yakima police officers responded to Multicare Memorial Hospital in reference to a gunshot victim. The victim, a 30-year-old male resident of Yakima, was stabilized and flown to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle for treatment. Patrol officers believe the shooting happened at a residence near South 28th Ave.
Detectives are currently investigating the incident and urge anyone with information to contact the Yakima Police Department at (509) 575-6200.
OFFICERS WERE BUSY AT THE EAST YAKIMA WALMART SATURDAY AS WELL
Saturday a busy day for Yakima Police Officers. Members of the department's SWAT team were called out to the east Yakima Walmart for a man who refused to leave his semi-truck parked in the parking lot.
The man was wanted on warrants and was found in the truck by Officers.
Officers from the Yakima Police Department and Deputies from the Yakima County Sheriff's Office tried to talk to the man but he refused so authorities broke a window on the truck and the man was removed and taken into custody without incident.
He's sitting in the Yakima County jail today.
