Rep. Jeremie Dufault of Selah says he believes enough money can be raised to open the pools for a "big part" of the swim season. He says that gives lawmakers a year to see what they can do in Olympia to help the situation. "We have significant financial commitments already, "says Rep. Chris Corry of Yakima. "The community has been very generous. It's really been amazing." You can help by donating to the Lions Pool fund through the Yakima Valley Community Foundation.

SIGNIFICANT COMMITMENTS ALREADY

A news release says Dufault and Corry have secured $20,000 in commitments. Other local donations have raised the total pledge to $30,000.
The goal of the group is $120,000. That money would be used to open Lions pool in April and May and Franklin pool from June to August.
Dufault and Corry are joined by Sen. Curtis King of Yakima, Sen. Nikki Torres of Pasco, Rep. Deb Manjarrez of Wapato, and Rep. Gloria Mendoza of Grandview—all Republicans—in their efforts. "We must find a way to reopen these pools for Yakima's children and families," the six legislators stated jointly.

THE MAYOR SAYS THE CITY IS READY TO HELP

Yakima Mayor Matt Brown is urging the city to contribute. He says the effort deserves backing from the city of Yakima. Brown says the city needs a total of $270,000 to open Lions Pool in April and May, and to keep Franklin open for the entire summer. Brown says if the capital campaign succeeds, " I hope our staff can identify $150,000 in one-time funds to reach that goal."
Both pools were closed as a result of cuts to the 2026 city budget.
On Tuesday, the mayor called a special meeting of the Yakima City Council for Thursday, March 26 at 6 p.m. to discuss the issue.
