Fires on the Yakima Greenway are a big problem according to the Yakima Fire Department. Capt. Jeff Pfaff says since early 2017 the department has responded to more than 60 fires. he latest was Tuesday morning. Pfaff says many are started by people who are homeless and living or sleeping in the area. He says it's costing the city thousands of dollars to battle the fires. "We have to hire overtime crews when a lot of these fires break out so it that's costing the city a lot of money and we're trying to take care of it."
He says the department is working closely with the Yakima Police Department and the city codes division to hopefully stop or slow down the amount of fires started on the Greenway every year.
