The Yakima City Council Tuesday voted on a resolution that cancelled the use of the E-Verify program in the city. The city has been using the system since 2011 to check the citizenship status of employees or contracted employees. The council voted 4-3 Tuesday to cancel the program. Council members Brad Hill, Kay Funk and Holly Cousens voted in favor of keeping the program but they were in the minority. City officials say the E-Verify program placed an "administrative, economic, and regulatory burden on small businesses that contracted with or would otherwise consider contracting with the city of Yakima."

The council voted and the program was cancelled immediately.
