The Yakima City Council Tuesday approved a $20 increase in car tabs for city residents that will fund millions of dollars of street and sidewalk work. City residents will begin paying the extra fee on July 1. The money paid by vehicle owners will bring in about $1.5 million annually and will help fund a $10 million facelift of North 1st Street the official entrance to the city of Yakima. The council voted 4-2 for the increase with council members Bill Lover and Holly Cousins voting against the measure. Council member Avina Gutierrez did not attend Tuesday's meeting.
