Wine Country-Garbage
WATERLOO, N.Y. (AP) — A plan for a daily trash train from New York City to a landfill in the Finger Lakes is drawing opposition from winemakers and local residents.
Eagle Crest Winery owner Will Ouweleen says the Finger Lakes shouldn't be the Big Apple's garbage dump.
But the region already has four of the state's largest landfills, including Seneca Meadows, which has a contract pending to receive 24 to 36 rail cars of trash daily from New York City.
The landfill in Seneca Falls and Waterloo is the largest in the state, receiving 2 million tons of trash a year from as far as 500 miles away. New York City's Sanitation Department says switching from trucks to rail cars will reduce highway traffic and air emissions.
