Yakima Bird Flu Death: Risks & Facts
A Yakima County resident died Saturday, November 1 from the bird flu. Is this the next COVID? The next global pandemic? Don’t get too worried.
The bird flu (avian influenza) is a flu strain that often spreads among marine birds. However, the virus has made inroads into spreading among different animals, especially dairy cattle in the United States.
In October 2026, the bird flu was detected on Yakima dairy farms. So far, 39 dairy herds in the county have tested positive for avian influenza. Yikes.
Luckily, the virus is not easily transmissible to humans. To contract the bird flu, you must come into contact with an infected animal’s body fluids, including raw unpasteurized milk. More often, it’s spread from tiny air particles in farm environments where the disease has spread. There is no evidence of sustained human-to-human spread! Only 30 cases were recorded in 2025.
Even when a human contracts bird flu, it’s usually extremely mild. The fatality in Yakima County was a dairy worker with significant underlying health conditions, as is the case in all 3 of the cases that have resulted in death in the United States.
So you can rest easy tonight! No lockdowns or mask mandates to come.
