As the end of the year approaches, the Washington State Patrol  reports a troubling trend on the roads, with 202 fatal vehicle crashes recorded so far in 2024.

SOME OF THE FATALITIES INVOLVED DRUNK DRIVERS

Among these accidents, 36 involved impaired drivers, raising serious concerns about road safety across the state. In addition to these tragic fatalities, about 500 individuals have sustained serious injuries in vehicle crashes this year. Officials from Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) emphasize that many of these incidents could have been prevented if drivers had not chosen to drink and drive. They say with the holiday season approaching, the risk of impaired driving incidents increases significantly.

DO YOU SPEED WHEN YOU DRIVE? LOOK AT YOUR PHONE?

In addition to impaired driving, speed has been cited as a contributing factor in numerous crashes. WSP troopers remind motorists to adhere to posted speed limits as a way to prevent accidents. “Driving at safe speeds is crucial for the safety of all road users. Without a doubt, speed can be a deadly factor in a collision,” stated a WSP spokesperson.
Distracted driving also remains a significant concern, with many lives lost due to inattention while driving. With the rise of mobile device usage, the WSP urges drivers to remain focused and avoid any distractions while on the road.

TROOPERS ASK THAT YOU SIMPLY DRIVE AND PAY ATTENTION

Families and friends are reminded that a simple decision to plan ahead can save lives this holiday season. By working together to prioritize safety, Washingtonians can help reduce the number of fatal accidents and ensure that the holidays remain joyful for all.
