WARNING from the BBB; Text Message Scam Now Hitting WA State
Scammers are busy looking for ways to scam you out of your money or financial information. The Better Business Bureau is warning of a new scam in the form of a text message.
IF YOU DON'T RECOGNIZE THE NUMBER DON'T ANSWER THE TEXT
The con artists are now sending out scam text messages and the BBB is hoping you'll ignore any unsolicited messages to protect yourself. Some of the messages say they've detected fraudulent activity on your account and tell you to act now. BBB officials says always ask yourself if you gave the company permission to text you?
Did you enter a recent contest? Are you expecting a package?
REALLY CURIOUS? CHECK THE OFFICIAL COMPANY WEBSITE
If you really want to know who sent the message, especially if it's a message from a company you deal with the BBB says check the information on the companies official website rather than clicking on a text message.
SEE A LINK IN THE TEXT? IGNORE IT
Watch out for links that are suspicious. Most of the scam text messages contain a link. Don't click on the link. Some of the links could lead to downloading malware onto your device. That could lead a scammer getting your personal or financial information including passwords.
YOU MUST USE YOUR COMMON SENSE
BBB officials say just use some common sense and know that cons or scammers are looking for any way to get you to respond to a message you may not recognize.
The bottom line?
When in doubt, contact the businesses directly to find out if they really tried to contact you.
