Student Walkouts Planned At Yakima School Districts Wednesday
Students in school districts across the country and in Yakima plan to walk out of classrooms for 17 minutes at 10 a.m. Wednesday (March 14) to remember the 17 people killed at a high school in Florida last month. Keston Vernon, senior class president at West Valley High School, says no organized walkout is planned at his school.
"It is your choice to walk out of class or not," he says. "But at West Valley I don't think a lot of teachers will be stopping classes for it. We are doing something during Ram prep to give credence."
He says a special school assembly is planned Wednesday that will involve local authorities. Vernon says they'll talk about school threats and how to prevent school violence in the future. Other activities are also planned at other schools around the valley including Davis and Eisenhower high schools.
