Yakima Man Arrested For Voyeurism at Local Store

A 40-year-old man is being held in the Yakima County jail after being arrested on Friday for voyeurism. Yakima Police were called to the Yakima Union Gospel Mission Thrift Store at 20th Avenue and Lincoln for a report of a man taking pictures of women in dressing rooms.

Police arrived as the suspect was leaving the store on Friday

When officers arrived 40-year-old Jose Mendoza-Castenada was leaving the store in a vehicle. Police tried to stop him but he fled. Authorities later found Mendoza-Castenada at a home in the 400 block of West D Street. But instead of speaking with police he armed himself with kitchen knives and threatened to kill officers. That's when the Yakima Police SWAT Team members were called in to help. For several hours police say they tried to get Mendoza-Castenada to surrender.

The suspect was finally taken into custody after several hours

SWAT team members say they used several less lethal options in an attempt to "persuade the suspect to surrender." When the suspect did finally exit the home on Friday night he was armed with multiple knives and tried to slash and cut officers who were nearby. Officers then used what they call less lethal "impact weapons" and the Police K9 to take the suspect into custody.

The suspect is now facing multiple charges in Yakima County Superior Court

40-year-old Jose Mendoza-Castenada is now facing multiple charges including Voyeurism, Felony Harrassment, First Degree Assault and Eluding Police.
Police say Mendoza-Castenada could be a suspect in a number of different reports of voyeurism reported at other retail stores last week.
