Shots Fired Through Door of Yakima Home
Yakima Police are investigating a gang related shooting reported on Saturday night. Capt. Jay Seely says officers were called to a home in the 1500 block of Landon Avenue at about 11:00PM Saturday.
POLICE FOUND A 15-YEAR-OLD GANG MEMBER SHOT IN THE CHEST
When they arrived they found a 15-year-old girl, who is a local gang member shot in the chest area. She and her mother told police that they heard the doorbell ring Saturday night. The teen went to answer the door and was instead shot in the chest by someone who fired gunshots through the door. Seely says the girl was taken to a Yakima Valley Memorial Hospital and then transferred to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle. That’s where she was treated and released. Seely says she was shot in the chest area but the bullet didn’t hit any vital organs. He says she was very fortunate she wasn't killed.
SECURITY FOOTAGE FROM THE AREA SHOW FIVE SUSPECTS
Officers found security footage from the area and Capt. Seely says it shows five people approach the home and ring the door bell. The five then opened fire on the home shooting through the door and then fleeing in a vehicle. Seely says video from area security cameras and ring doorbells have become a huge help for local authorities. He encourages people to get involved with the Yakima Police Department's Safecam program. Registration is voluntary and police will not have remote access to your camera. All you have to do is register your camera and answer a few simple questions. Check out the program at yakimapolice.org.
Police are searching for suspects. They say the teen victim didn’t want to cooperate with police because she’s a Yakima gang member herself.
The investigation continues.
