Seattle City Council Votes to Defy Trump Immigration Order

SEATTLE (AP) — The Seattle City Council has unanimously approved a resolution defying President Donald Trump's temporary immigration and refugee ban.

Seattlepi.com reports that the "Welcoming City" resolution passed Monday reaffirms Seattle's "don't ask, don't collect" policy on immigration status and says the city will not allow its police department to be used as "de facto immigration officers."

Trump's order temporarily suspends the entire U.S. refugee program and bans all entry from seven countries with majority-Muslim populations for 90 days.

It has drawn nationwide protests since it was issued Friday.

Monday's resolution in Seattle also reaffirms Mayor Ed Murray's statements that Seattle will continue to be an immigrant-protecting "sanctuary city."

Trump last week signed an executive action to crack down on such cities by cutting federal dollars.
