SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — The Pac-12 has suspended line judge Rich Troyer for one game and downgraded the entire officiating crew for giving Washington State an extra down in its game against Arizona State on Saturday.

The play came in the second quarter, when Washington State receiver Gabe Marks appeared to be stopped short on a fourth-down attempt as a whistle blew the play dead by the officials. After huddling, the officials determined it to be an inadvertent whistle and gave the Cougars another play.

Washington State scored on the next play and went on to win 38-24.

The Pac-12 said Sunday that the officials should have stopped the play at the point when the whistle for forward progress blew and awarded the ball to Arizona State.
