Opinion:

We’ve been following the Camas High School controversy very closely, which began when junior JV runner Logan Mihaioff began identifying as a girl and switched over to the girls' cross-country team. He then went from placing 76th at the Ultimook Race on September 5 to finishing 2nd in the Portland Invitational and 1st at the Union High School dual meet.

Walk-Out

However, it seems the girls are not ready to embrace this absurdity with open arms. During a dual meet against Battle Ground High School, 13 of the 24 female athletes on Camas’s team locked arms and walked off the field, forfeiting the race. According to team parents, tensions had been high on the team for weeks, with many team captains stepping down and quitting altogether.

Not only did Camas girls walk off the team, but 5 girls from the opposing Battle Ground team refused to participate as well. After receiving support from many school parents, the Camas School District superintendent clarified there would be no punishment for any of the girls who forfeited the race.

Response

They also released another community statement again explaining they were legally bound by Washington law RCW 28A.642, which prohibits schools from discriminating based on gender identity. Due to safety concerns after national news media attention, the upcoming 4A Greater St. Helens League Championship meet has been moved from a public park to the former Underwriters Laboratories campus in Camas to keep things secure.

To show your support for Camas girls, vote for I-638 (Defending Equity in Interscholastic Sports Act), which bans biological males from competing in female sports and requires sex verification from a healthcare provider for all female school sports participants.
