National Police Week 2026 is underway, running from May 10 to May 16, with major events nationwide honoring the dedication and sacrifice of law enforcement officers.

PEACE OFFICERS MEMORIAL DAY IS MAY 15

In Washington, D.C., ceremonies will include the 38th Annual Candlelight Vigil on May 13, where 363 officers recently added to the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial will be honored. The solemn event pays tribute to officers who have made the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty. Established in 1962, the observance includes Peace Officers Memorial Day on May 15. In Yakima a special ceremony is planned on Friday beginning at 10:00 am at Sarg Hubbard Park.

A TORCH RUN IN YAKIMA TO HONOR SPECIAL OLYMPICS

Along with the national observances, local communities are holding events to encourage community engagement and support for law enforcement.
According to the Yakima Police Department, Sunday, May 17, the Yakima Police Department, along with other participating agencies, will host a Law Enforcement Torch Run supporting Special Olympics Washington. The run begins at 10:00 a.m. at the Yakima Fred Meyer on North 40th Avenue.

COFFEE WITH A COP ON SUNDAY IN YAKIMA

This Torch Run promotes awareness for athletes with intellectual disabilities and shows law enforcement’s ongoing commitment to community service.
If you can't participate in the run, the Yakima Police Department invites the you to join a “Coffee with a Cop” event at the Downtown Yakima Farmers Market in the Rotary Marketplace at 15 west Yakima Avenue from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. on Sunday. You can meet officers, ask questions, and learn more about law enforcement efforts in the Yakima area this spring and summer.
