The city of Fort Worth, Texas, is considering a ban on hiring people that use tobacco products. Would you like to see that here in Yakima?

Fort Worth Mayor Betsy Price cited the added insurance costs of having smokers in the workforce, saying, “Certainly we put taxpayer dollars into health care for our employees, and anything that might benefit the health to make our employees more protective and healthy, we’re going to take a look at.”

When a city saves money on employee healthcare, it saves taxpayers money.

On one hand, if you were a smoker, knowing that being a non smoker was a condition of employment, would you quit smoking to get that job? On the other hand, would you, as a smoker, feel you were not being treated fairly as a potential employee?

Could this go even farther, taking a person's weight as a possible consideration?
