Would You Leave Washington for Your Soul Mate?

How far would you move for a relationship? How about for love and marriage? What if you knew beyond a shadow of a doubt that that person would be your ride or die, your death do you part, your soul mate? Thanks to a recent survey, more people than you think would relocate in the pursuit of love! We have the breakdown below.

How Far Would You Travel For Love?

I might be the worst one to ask this question to. When I was fresh out of high school, I met my first love. We had apparently met previously as she was a foreign exchange student, but because we hung out with different groups, we didn’t really get to know each other.

She was back in the states visiting friends here in Washington, and was bored one night, hit me up on AIM (America Online’s Instant Messenger, if that tells you how long ago this was), and we started talking, and decided to go out on a date that night.

It was a beautiful 2-year relationship that we had. She traveled and stayed at my home with my family, and I traveled to her home and stayed with her and her family. For better or for worse, it ended, mainly because I couldn’t take all the worries and young-adult-filled angst that came with a long-distance relationship. How long distant? Halfway around the world. From Naches, Washington, to Seville, Spain!

We still talk from time to time, and we’re both happily married (to other people) and have our own families, so life works out. Traveling for love was fun, but it was rough.

Love Survey Says

According to Tawkify and a recent survey they conducted of singles, found that a majority of people would relocate for the right partner. 84% would pack it all up and move for love.

There are benefits to long-distance relationships (at least at first). It really builds the communication, and as the old saying goes, “absence makes the heart grow fonder.”

But that absence doesn’t last too long, with 47% willing to stay far away for a year or more before needing to be closer.

The survey also showed that 33% spend anywhere from $150-$300 per trip, with some spending over $600. Out of curiosity, I looked up how much a flight from Yakima to Seville would be today, and a round-trip ticket would be over $2,500, which is about a $1000 more than my trip in 2000.
