As summer approaches, many in Yakima are preparing for floating adventures along the Yakima and Naches Rivers if that's you check what you pack because there's 7 things you can't have while on that float.

THE RESTRICTIONS ARE IN PLACE TO PROTECT OUR RIVERS

According to the Washington State Department of Natural Resources the restrictions are designed to protect public safety, wildlife, and the environment. Here are seven key things you should know you cannot do or bring when enjoying the rivers this spring and summer:
1. Fire Safety Restrictions
Firewood: Bringing your own firewood is typically prohibited to prevent the spread of invasive insects and diseases.
Open Fires: Starting open fires may be restricted during high fire danger periods—always check current fire bans before planning a cookout or campfire.
Fireworks: Using fireworks or exploding targets is generally illegal and strictly prohibited to prevent wildfires and disturbance to wildlife.

2. Fishing Regulations

Gear Limitations: Use only permitted fishing gear. For certain species, artificial lures and specific gear are required, and bait may be prohibited in parts of the river.
Catch and Release: All trout are to be released following regulations, and hooks must be barbless when specified.

3. Environmental Protection Measures

Single-Use Plastics: Many areas have bans on single-use plastics like bottles, bags, and straws to reduce pollution.
Harmful Substances: Do not bring chemicals, detergents, or other substances that could harm the aquatic environment.
Animals: Restrictions may be in place on bringing pets or other animals into sensitive areas, especially to protect wildlife and native species.

Glass and Styrofoam Containers: These are banned along the river to prevent pollution and harm to wildlife.
Alcohol: Consuming alcohol on the river is illegal and can impair judgment, increasing safety risks.
Noisy Activities: Excessive noise, especially during evening hours, may be restricted to maintain peace and protect wildlife.
Unpermitted Activities: Camping outside designated areas, or engaging in unauthorized activities, can result in penalties.

SAFETY IS ALWAYS NUMBER ONE

5. Safety Warnings

Toxic Algae Blooms: The Yakima River has experienced harmful algae blooms in recent years. Always check current conditions and avoid swimming or interacting with the water where blooms are present to prevent health issues.
Strong Currents: Be cautious of swift currents and changing water conditions—wear life jackets and stay within safe areas.

WAIT, WHAT NO ALCOHOL?
