Between 2015 and 2019, the National Fire Protection Association reported an average of 45,800 home heating fires annually, causing approximately 480 deaths, 1,350 injuries, and $1 billion in damages. FIRE OFFICIALS IN UNION GAP INVESTIGATED A DEADLY FIRE LAST YEAR
In November 2024, a deadly fire in Union Gap claimed the lives of 29-year-old Bernice Hernandez-Baca, 28-year-old Lucio Sanchez Hernandez, and their 1-year-old daughter, Daniela Sanchez-Hernandez. Investigators determined that the fire was ignited by a chair placed against a wall heater, and the home was without functioning smoke alarms. All three family members died of smoke inhalation. A press release from the Washington State Fire Marshal’s Office revealed that roughly 85% of fire fatalities happen in homes that should have functioning smoke alarms installed.
ARE YOU PREPARED FOR A POWER OUTAGE?
As the cold weather continues power officials are advising residents to prepare for potential outages lasting up to three days. They recommend having blankets, food, flashlights, and extra batteries on hand to ensure safety and comfort.
Additionally, residents are urged to refrain from using candles, which contribute to many residential fires and related fatalities. Common safety tips include changing filters on heating systems, dressing warmly, closing blinds, and using towels to block drafts.
With the winter season upon us, officials emphasize the importance of staying vigilant and proactive about home heating safety to prevent further tragedies.
