SEATTLE (AP) — A Coast Guard crew rescued two 12-year-old kayakers who became stranded near the San Juan Islands.

The U.S. Coast Guard said in a news release that officials received a report Wednesday afternoon that the boys were paddling together in a single kayak near Lopez Island.

Officials say they battled the water's current for more than an hour without making progress, making it instead to the tiny Crab Island with no way of getting back.

The kayakers paddled out to meet the Coast Guard crew on a response boat and were safely transported to Lopez Island.
