City Takes No Action On Camping Ordinance

The Yakima City council decided to take no action on the camping ordinance at Tuesday's council meeting. Council members agreed to continue to search for additional cold weather shelters while saying they weren't comfortable with allowing camping on city public property. A majority of the people who spoke at the meeting told the council they were against the proposal.
The current homeless encampment on South 3rd Street will close on November 15 when cold weather shelters will open. The council Tuesday approved the opening of the shelters at three area churches. The Unitarian Universalist Church of Yakima, Central Lutheran Church and Englewood Christian Church. The shelters will be open from November 15 to March 15.
