Toppenish's Central Washington Junior Livestock show has been canceled for this year because of the coronavirus pandemic. The Board of Directors announced the sad news Friday in a joint statement.

"The decision did not come lightly and there have been several hours of discussion but it is the official recommendation of the CDC, Yakima County Health Department and our insurance company," the statement said. "Unfortunately the final decision was made with our insurance company stating we would not be able to get coverage for the show due to the current circumstances and the Yakima Health District stating the lockdown was until further notice."

The board's announcement went on to explain that organizers of the show did not want to put exhibitors or show attendees at risk of contracting the COVID-19 virus by holding an event at which safe social distancing would be difficult.

"We know full well the effort and investment you have put into your projects in both time and money. We are sincerely sorry for the inconvenience and hardship this may cause," the board's statement added.

Despite the cancellation, exhibitors should complete their final entry cards, though they should not send fees. Cards must be postmarked by April 15.

The show had been scheduled for May 3-6.
