With the completion of the Martin Luther King Jr. underpass the Yakima City Council will be faced with a decision.

The council must decide whether to spend money saved from the underpass to fund an art project called “Bins of Light.” The art would be placed above the underpass and would light up as trains pass.

City Manager Tony O'Rourke tells KIT News, “There was a discussion to do that before I arrived. We just want to go back and reaffirm that with the council before we take any action.”

O'Rourke says he will ask the council to give direction to city staff at an August 19 meeting.

The Bins of Light art is part of the $10.6 million dollar project that started earlier this year to create the underpass but it was finished under budget. The savings from the underpass will help fund the more than $300,000 art project if the council gives the OK.

A ribbon cutting ceremony is being held Wednesday to open the underpass to traffic. The underpass will be open at noon today.
