Armed Gang Members Arrested In Sunnyside
News Release from Sunnyside Police.
Sunnyside Police netted six gang related arrests this weekend, including two involving
firearms. Early Saturday morning Sunnyside Police responded to a call in the 402 W Maple area where a
parent located a juvenile male in her daughter’s room and was unable to get him to leave. When Police
responded they located a 14 year old male who was the suspect in an incident at Central Park earlier in the
day where he had been suspected of brandishing a firearm at his sister’s boyfriend. The 15 year old
female claimed ownership of the pistol and both were charged with Unlawful Possession of a Firearm.
The 14 year old male is a known gang member.
On Sunday at about 5pm Officers were alerted to three juvenile males spray painting gang graffiti on fruit
bins at Johnson Concentrates in the area of Edison and Zillah Ave. Officers located the juveniles, who
had fled from the scene. The two 14 year old males and the 13 year old were arrested on charges of
Malicious Mischief 3rd and Criminal Trespassing 2nd and booked into Yakima County Juvenile
Detention.
On Monday at about 10pm Officers were called to the Blaine and 11th Ave area of town regarding a
weapons offense. Victims playing football in the street were confronted by a 16 year old male who
threatened them while displaying a handgun. Officers located the suspect and took him into custody. The
Officers then located a small handgun matching the description and two knives. All of these items were
located in an area that was easily accessible to the suspect’s seven siblings, all 12 years old and younger.
The juvenile was booked into Yakima County Juvenile Detention Center on charges of Assault 2nd (6
counts), Felony Harassment (6 counts), Reckless Endangerment, Unlawful Possession of a Firearm and
Discharging a Firearm in City Limits.
