Opponents of the Safe and Accurate Food Labeling Act have little concern for the bill in the Senate, for now. The SAFE Act passed the U.S. House earlier this year but has yet to be introduced in the Senate. Senate Republican John Hoeven of North Dakota is planning to introduce the bill if he can get a Democratic co-sponsor and enough support in the Senate to move it through the chamber. The legislation would be a companion bill to the SAFE Act to create a federal standard for the voluntary labeling of foods with GMO ingredients. House Sponsor Mike Pompeo of Kansas is confident the bill can pass the Senate, but opponents disagree.

Japanese flour mill managers are visiting Oregon, Idaho and Montana this week. The mid-level flour mill managers are executives from milling companies representing Japan’s National Cooperative of Millers.The trade team will learn more about the efficient wheat export supply chain in the U.S. In the marketing year 2014-15, Japan was the single largest buyer of wheat from the United States. In the same year, Japan was also the biggest market for U.S. hard red spring and soft white wheat. The tour ends September, 26th.
