911 Operators Holding a BBQ and Bake Sale to Benefit Fire Victims
Every day the 9-1-1 call-takers and dispatchers who work at the SunComm operations center in
Yakima make sure victims of accidents, fires, crime, and other emergencies get help quickly by
getting first responders on scene as soon as possible. This Thursday, the SunComm staff will
be taking a slightly different approach to providing assistance by staging a barbecue and bake
sale fundraiser to benefit victims of the Taylor Bridge wildfire as well as the emergency services
personnel that have been working on the fire.
The fundraiser will run from 10:00 am until 4:00 pm on Thursday, August 23rd in the training
room of the Yakima Police Department Special Operations building (207 South 3rd Street),
which is located across the street from the Zais Law & Justice Center. Hamburgers, hotdogs,
chips, and salads will be served all day. A wide variety of baked goods will also be for sale.
All of the proceeds generated from the event will be given to the Yakima Valley Chapter of the
American Red Cross. In addition to helping people who had to evacuate their homes due to the
Taylor Bridge fire, the Red Cross has provided critical support to emergency services personnel
on scene.
The wildfire started on Monday, August 13th and has since burned more than 23,000 acres in
Kittitas County. More than 1000 firefighters and other emergency services personnel have
worked on the Taylor Bridge fire over the past week.
