Three in Yakima Sickened by E. coli Linked to Local Store
Three people in Yakima are being treated for Shiga Toxin-producing E. coli in connection to a local store that's been voluntarily shut down.
ALL THREE PEOPLE ATE OR PURCHASED FOOD
Yakima Health District officials say the three cases have sickened the three people who all reported eating meat, produce, and/or prepared foods from Mercado Los Amigos, located at 1409 Fruitvale Blvd.
THE STORE OWNER TEMPORARILY CLOSED THE STORE
A press release from the health district says as a precaution the store closed on September 18 and the owners are now working closely with the Yakima Health District to address the risk and to make sure future operations are as safe as possible.
CHECK YOUR FOOD AT HOME. HOW ARE YOU FEELING?
A press release from the health district says if you purchased or consumed meat, produce, or prepared foods from Mercado Los Amigos between September 10 and September 18 you should contact your healthcare provider if you're not feeling good.
Specifically symptoms include:
• Abdominal cramping
• Severe or bloody diarrhea
• Vomiting
SOME PEOPLE COULD BE SEVERLY SICKENED
While it's a serious illness most people recover within 5 to 10 days. It's a different story for children under 5 and adults over 65, and those who have a weakened immune system. Health officials say those people are at higher risk for severe illness like kidney failure. Melissa Sixberry, Director of Disease Control, Yakima Health District says some simple steps will keep you and your family safe.

TAKE ALL THE PRECAUTIONS
She says it’s important to wash your hands regularly, follow food safety tips, and
pay attention to symptoms such as diarrhea or stomach cramps. If you are experiencing
symptoms, contact your healthcare provider. These simple actions go a long way in protecting your family.”
