I saw it on the news and couldn't believe my eyes. The headlines said that the Biden administration was considering payments to family members of aliens who entered the country illegally.  Not just a few bucks for some kind of expenses either, but $450,000 per person for family members who had been separated in the past during the intake process.

They Might Offer WHAT???

The Washington Examiner reported, "Officials from the departments of Health and Human Services, Homeland Security, and Justice have proposed paying each person $450,000, or nearly $1 million per two-person family, to settle claims about the lasting traumatic and psychological effects of being torn apart as a result of former President Donald Trump’s zero-tolerance policy, the Wall Street Journal reported Thursday afternoon."

I thought it was a typo but it's real.  There are some 55-hundred children who were separated (in a moment we will explain why) who have now generated multiple claims and hundreds of lawsuits.

They Knew What They Were Getting Into

How families are treated at the border depends on the policy in place at the time. Most often families are kept together and moved through the immigration track but under the Trump Zero Tolerance Policy, adults crossing the border were diverted to a federal prosecution track and children can't be housed with parents being held for prosecution. By law, the families had to be separated. It was a tough stance that some Trump officials said they hoped would serve as a deterrent for families considering coming to America illegally.

Why does this policy result in children being separated from their parents?

"When adults are detained and prosecuted in the criminal justice system for immigration offenses, their children cannot, by law, be housed with them in criminal jails, so the family unit is separated. The children are placed with the Department of Health and Human Services in shelters until they can be released to a family member, guardian, or foster family in the United States. Previous administrations used family detention facilities, allowing the whole family to stay together while awaiting their deportation case in immigration court, or alternatives to detention, which required families to be tracked but released from custody to await their court date.  Some children may have been separated from the adults they entered with, in cases where the family relationship could not be established, child trafficking was suspected, or there were not sufficient family detention facilities available." 

SO, was the Trump Zero Tolerance Policy legal?  And if it was, what kind of case do illegal aliens have?  And if there is a case of some kind, is a negotiated settlement better than 900 trials?  And if the country looks to have some kind of liability, does it take that kind of money to ease the aftermath of "traumatic and psychological effects" of someone who knew they were committing an illegal act in the first place coming into a country with an advertised ZERO-TOLERANCE policy???

I Bet They Didn't Want That To Get Out!

The subject matter here is gas on the fire to a population of US, patriotic Americans outraged at seeing so many people losing their jobs and income over not getting a shot, while thousands of illegal aliens who broke into America and weren't required to get the shot, possibly being given nearly a million dollars per family!!  I hear the camel's back cracking and I'm not the only guy saying it.

If this were to happen, the level of anger & hatred Americans would feel for their own government would be unprecedented. The act of stealing that level of taxpayer dollars from American citizens [sic] and giving them to lawbreaking illegal immigrants would set off a powder keg,” Rep. Jeff Duncan, a South Carolina Republican, wrote on Twitter.

Ohio Congressman Jim Jordan points out the ludicrous nature of burdening American taxpayers while giving money to invaders.

So through gritted teeth, you ask, "why are we even considering this?  These aren't citizens, they don't have rights....or do they?"

As a matter of fact, they do...and ALMOST as many as you!

President John Adams was so very right in October of 1798 when he wrote, “We have no government armed with power capable of contending with human passions unbridled by morality and religion. Avarice, ambition, revenge or gallantry would break the strongest cords of our Constitution as a whale goes through a net. Our Constitution is designed only for a moral and religious people. It is wholly inadequate for any other.”

SO what happens when someone without that "moral and religious" core decides to work the Constitution to their advantage?  The greater good is not always the winner.

Section One of the 14th Amendment to the Constitution -- No state shall make or enforce any law which shall abridge the privileges or immunities of citizens of the United States; nor shall any state deprive any person of life, liberty or property, without due process of law; nor deny to any person within its jurisdiction the equal protection of the laws.

[ Translation: get here, reach land and get your toes in the sand of Florida, Texas, Arizona or California and you immediately become a " person within its jurisdiction"   and as such you are entitled to the equal protection of the laws. ]

 "The critics all claim that undocumented workers or immigrants or migrants — whichever label is the flavor of the day — don't have legal rights because they are lawbreakers by entering the country illegally and owe no loyalty to the United States."

Get Here Any You're Good...Is That Good For America Today?

The courts have interpreted that once here, even if illegal in your arrival. you're subject to the laws of the country - which is a kind of loyalty {really? are you kidding? Nope} In fact, they have ruled in a Texas case about illegal migrant kids being accepted at school -" the undocumented status of these children does not establish a sufficient rational basis for denying benefits that the state affords other residents."

So, for now, all we can do is bombard the administration with calls, emails, tweets, letters, and texts expressing our thoughts and feelings about illegal actors being rewarded while Americans are losing jobs and benefits. And we can ask ourselves what happened to that "moral and religious people" for which the Constitution was designed. And we can wonder how far things go before something serious is unleashed.
