Northwest Harvest and Yakima Schools Partner For Better Food Prep
The Yakima School District has partnered with Northwest Harvest to help feed hungry students. On Tuesday a the district and Northwest Harvest signed a contract to work together to "receive, organize, store, and prep-for-delivery the food needed to make student meals, moving this service from the district warehouse on North 4th Avenue to the new Northwest Harvest cold storage facility off of Fruitvale Blvd."
THOUSANDS OF STUDENTS CAN GRAB A FREE BREAKFAST AND LUNCH
Each school day the Yakima School District provides breakfast and lunch free of charge. The food is available to any of the 16,000 students in the district. District officials say they rencently identified the need to improve the "daily operations" of the preparation of student meals because of the district's aging small warehouse. They say the older facility has made it a challenge to "receive, organize, store, and distribute food efficiently."
DISTRICT OFFICIALS SAY THE MOVE COULD SAVE MONEY AND WASTE
A press release from the district says moving the food preparation operations to a "state-of-the-art Northwest Harvest facility is exciting as it will improve efficiencies that will likely reduce waste and costs." The contracted partnership between the two organizations, which was signed on March 21, creates efficiencies for the Yakima School District in receiving, organizing, and preparing for the delivery of the food needed to their 22 schools that serve breakfast and lunch, free of charge to all families, everyday.
