Yakima Police have identified a man arrested for the shooting death of a 74-year-old woman early Sunday as 40-year-old Jeffrey Pickens. He's facing a first-degree murder charge in the Yakima County jail.
Pickens was arrested after police arrived at the 18th Avenue apartment at about 12:40 a.m. Sunday and saw him running from the area. Officers say when they arrived in the area they heard 10 to 15 shots. After arresting Pickens they found a 74-year-old dead in the apartment.
Pickens is expected to make a court appearance Monday afternoon on charges of first-degree murder and unlawful possession of a firearm.

Police have arrested a 40-year-old Yakima man in connection with the early Sunday morning fatal shooting of a 74-year-old woman at a Yakima apartment. Capt. Jay Seely with the Yakima Police Department says officers were called to 1315 South 18th Avenue at about 12:40 a.m. Sunday for a call of shots fired. When officers arrived they heard a series of 10-15 shots coming from a nearby apartment complex. They soon found a 40-year-old man running from the scene.
Seely says while they held the man they checked an apartment and found the 74-year-old woman dead from multiple gunshots.
The suspect is being held in the Yakima County jail on a charge of first-degree murder and unlawful possession of a firearm. No names have been released and no word if the suspect and the victim are related.
