Cruising Yakima Avenue will soon be legal without a permit or insurance. The Yakima City Council Tuesday voted in favor of developing an ordinance to repeal the 1994 anti-cruising legislation. It was put in place to stop gang activity along the avenue and was a direct result of a gang related shooting in which a car crashed into a business. City staff is expected to have the ordinance ready during the next council meeting August 5. That will repeal the current law on the books banning cruising and allow drivers to cruise the avenue at anytime. But official cruise nights will still requirements like permits and insurance.
The ordinance repealing the cruising law won't take effect until 30 days after the vote on August 5.
So in essence the city is expected to open the avenue up to unofficial cruise night events.
