Just like many other veterans organizations officials with the American Legion in Yakima are hoping to increase falling membership. Originally founded after World War I to support returning soldiers the American Legion welcomes all veterans, regardless of their specific experiences.

HAVE YOU CONSIDERED JOINING THE AMERICAN LEGION?

According to Steve Thompson, President of the Legion's Honor Guard at the American Legion Post 36 in Yakima one of the biggest challenges facing the American Legion today is membership. Thompson stresses the Legion offers an important support system for veterans, offering a safe space to connect, share experiences, and address issues specific to the community.

THE LEGION SUPPORTS THE COMMUNITY

He says the organization also supports the community with cash donations to the Cadet Civil Air Patrol, assistance for Selah High School students traveling to World War II battlefields, support for organizations like ALS and pet rescues, and backing for student ROTC programs. The American Legion also fully supports local law enforcement. Veterans who become a part of the American Legion enjoy a variety of events including special dinners, movie nights, and family-oriented activities like pig roasts, clam chowder feeds, and jambalaya dinners.

ONE OF THE MOST IMPORTANT SERVICES IS HONORING DECEASED VETS

However Thompson says one of the most important and significant services offered is providing military honors for deceased veterans. The Legion's Honor Guard performs the ceremonies making sure all veterans receive a proper burial. He says one member of the Legion, has participated in about 1000 honor ceremonies over the last seven years.

THE LEGION IS EXPLORING AN ALL FEMALE HONOR GUARD

Looking ahead, the American Legion is exploring new ways to expand its mission. One idea under consideration is the creation of an all-female Honor Guard, dedicated to honoring the contributions and sacrifices of women veterans. So far Thompson says there's no all-female Honor Guards in the state. For more information check out the American Legion Post 36 Facebook page.
