I went to Vancouver this weekend to visit my grand kids Jackson and Ella.  At 5 1/2 and  almost 4, they are a dynamic duo of curiosity and chaos, play and pending disaster.  Yes, it was very fun!  The visit got me to thinking about their names and what's in store for popular baby names to come.

The Social Security Administration (SSA) is predicting what baby girl names will be most popular in 2020 with Emma, Olivia, and Ava expected to be the top three. (Ella was number 15 in 2018)

Emma has held the top spot for the last five years. The organization also tracks names that are rising in popularity and say the top five on the rise right now are: 1) Meaghan, 2) Dior, 3) Adalee, 4) Palmer, and 5) Oaklynn.

The website Nameberry notes that more and more girl and boy names seem to have been inspired by gemstones-- saying names like Amethyst, Emerald, Ruby, Onxy and Pearl are on the rise.

Other names gaining popularity are inspired by food (Kale, Kiwi, Maple), nature (Dawn, Aurora, Rainbow), and some are just popular boy names that are now being given to girls (Stevie, Max, Drew, Ryan.)

So what names are waiting in the wings, expected to make the list in the next few years?  Names like Posie, Elodie, Adah, Imogen, Ottilie, Seraphina, Cleo, Cordelia and Beatrix.
