The Toppenish City Council on Tuesday voted in favor of creating a transportation benefit district to help the city find money to make major street repairs. The council has the authority to increase car tabs in the city up to 20 dollars or use money from other areas. Toppenish city officials say when the benefit district is formed later this month. Board members will then begin the quest for dollars to fund Toppenish street upgrades. it's the same tactic the city of Yakima is using. It formed a district last year but also voted against imposing a car tab fee.

Drivers in Prosser, Grandview and Zillah are already paying higher car tab fees after those cities voted in favor of the funding source. *
