On this day in history, September 13, 1814, the British began the bombardment of Fort McHenry in Maryland during the War of 1812..  On board one of the attacking ships in the harbor was American Francis Scott Key who was on board to negotiate the release of some prisoners.  Key witnessed the shelling and seeing the Americans resolve to hold on, the next began writing the words that would become "The Star-Spangled Banner" 207 years ago !
