Yakima County Assessor Jacob Tate has announced some big changes to Washington’s Senior Citizen and Disabled Persons Property Tax Exemption Program, following the passage of Senate Bill 6162 during the 2026 legislative session.

INCOME THRESHOLDS ARE INCREASING

The new law aims to expand eligibility, simplify the application processes, and give increased tax relief for seniors, others with disabilities, and qualifying veterans.

WHAT'S CHANGING?

Starting with taxes payable in 2027 (based on 2026 income), the income thresholds used to determine exemption eligibility will be increased. For Yakima County, the preliminary income thresholds are set as follows:

Threshold 1 (Level A): $47,000
Threshold 2 (Level B): $54,000
Threshold 3 (Level C): $62,000

The new thresholds mark an increase from the current maximum qualifying income of $45,000 for 2026. Tate says the adjustments are part of a bigger effort to align state program eligibility with federal low-income standards, based on a percentage of the county’s median household income. The Washington State Association of Assessing Officers worked with legislators to make sure the new thresholds are fair and reflect local economic conditions.

HELPING SENIORS ON FIXED INCOMES

Tate says the improvements are designed to help residents on fixed incomes maintain their homes amid rising property values and taxes.
If you're currently receiving an exemption you don't need to take any action. He says income documentation for the 2026 tax year will not be accepted until after January 1, 2027, and must include finalized records such as filed tax returns (Form 1040), 1099s, or W-2s.

AS THE PROGRAM TRANSITIONS TO THE NEW THRESHOLDS

All current exemption recipients will be automatically reassessed and placed at the appropriate exemption level by the Assessor’s Office.
Individuals who previously exceeded income limits but now qualify under the updated thresholds may be contacted by mail.
New applications for the 2027 tax year will be accepted beginning in January 2027, once all 2026 income documentation is finished.
