State Tests Environmentally Friendly Lawn at State Capitol

OLYMPIA, Wash. (AP) — Washington state is testing an environmentally friendly lawn at the state Capitol. The lawn mixes species and reduces the need to mow.

The Olympian newspaper reports the pilot project will also reduce the use of water, fertilizer and pesticides.

One of the benefits of the new lawn — made up of slow-growing grasses, clover and low-growing perennials — is that it will help bring the area back to the historic landscape plan that called for a meadow-like area.

Signs will be posted at the test plots. Grounds staff will hand-pull some weeds from the ecolawn site.
